July 18, 2019 | Red Deer, AB – Another beautiful edition of the Westerner Days Parade, presented by Holiday Inn, kicked off the week’s festivities this morning in downtown Red Deer. Over 130 Parade entries moved through the city’s historical downtown district under bright blue skies, while over 35,000 people lined the streets to watch the annual community event. The procession included a variety of well-decorated entries; spectators witnessed unique entries including horse-drawn wagons, decorated vehicles, elaborate  floats, dance troops, mini cars and collector vehicles.

The winner of the Grand Award, sponsored by Etek Office Supplies, was the Philippine-Canadian Association of Red Deer & District with their entry consisting of an intricately decorated vehicle alongside the group’s cultural dancers adorned in their traditional attire. The Grand Award Honorable Mention, sponsored by Pivotal Chartered Professional Accountants, was awarded to Family First Chiropractic. Today marked an important day in the extensive history of the Westerner Days Parade. It was an honour to have Jason Kenny, Premier of Alberta, lead off the morning’s procession. Following the Parade, Premier Kenny attended the President’s Luncheon to meet and mingle with his fellow dignitaries at Westerner Park’s Fair grounds.

The first day of the 2019 Fair was incredibly successful. Bright and sunny weather invited over 14,371 people into the Park, making for a great first day of Westerner Days Fair & Exposition! Guests began to line up at the gates at 11:00 AM, one hour before the grounds opened to the public. New and exciting activities were showcased for Fair guests, including the Charity Dunk Tank and the #MyWDExperience Photo Moment contest. The Holiday Inn 19th Street Market featured over 70 exhibitors, while the Exhibition Hall was home to 26 life-sized animatronic dinosaurs.

The Red Deer Motors North American Pony Chuckwagon races saw Reed Rosencrans, sponsored by The Pipe Yard, took the lead with a time of 80.91 seconds. Neil Salmond with the ABC Restaurant tarp holds second place with a time of 81.69 and in third is Go RV Red Deer driven by John Scott with a time of 82.08.
