July 18, 2018 | Red Deer, AB – The 2018 Westerner Days Fair & Exposition started yesterday, Wednesday, July 18. Over 14,000 guests visited the Fair, a significant increase on the previous two years.
The Westerner Days Parade, presented by Bower Place, had 140 entries winding through the streets of Red Deer this year, an increase from previous years. The winner of the Grand Award, sponsored by Etek Office Supplies, was the incredible float made by Blue Grass Nursery, Sod and Garden Centre. The Honourable Mention, sponsored by Pivotal Chartered Professional Accountants, went to the Red Deer Titans Rugby Football Club. The Red Deer Motors North American Pony Chuckwagon Championships compliments this year’s Westerner Days theme, which celebrates Central Alberta’s western heritage. Jack Stott, sponsored by The Home Place, cantered into first place, with a time of 76.00. In second place we had Reed Rosecrans, sponsored by The Pipe Yard, with a time of 76.94 and third place went to John Stott, sponsored by Go Uncle Bens RV, with a time of 77.32. Fourth place was split between Marvin Hubl, sponsored by MNP, and Dale Young, sponsored by Calgary Flames Ambassadors, with a time of 77.38. The event will run every day of the Fair at 6pm, with the finals taking place on Sunday 22 July at 2pm.
This year’s Westerner Days will also feature chariot races. Fair-goers can look forward to some exciting battles to the finish line during the 5 heats of chariot racing prior to the wagons on Friday and Saturday at 5pm, and Sunday at 1pm.
Today is Tim Hortons Kids Day, where kids 12 and under get free gate admission until 6pm. Tim Hortons supports youth within our community with programs such as Camp Day, and we are thrilled to have them sponsor this day to enable families to participate in Central Alberta’s largest summer celebration.
In line with our western theme, fair-goers capped off their evening by taking in some amazing country music. Aaron Pritchett, Aaron Goodvin and Alecia Aichelle welcomed 3,300 excited fans at the TD Main Stage, presented by Real Country 95.5 and Real Country 93.3.
Tonight, Thursday, July 19, Helix, Lee Aaron and Iron Buffalo will take the TD Main Stage. The show, presented by 106.7 The Drive, begins at 8pm, with doors opening at 7pm. Floor seating tickets are available from the Ticket Alberta Box Office 90 minutes before the concert starts.
